Take Control of Your Filenames with file_wrangler!

  • Rename gigabytes of vacation photos with a single click.
  • Quickly identify and correct offending filenames before copying to a server.
  • Export an HTML- (or other languages) tagged text document of your filelist.
  • Create configurable sets of common renaming needs.

How Do I Use file_wrangler?

  1. Drag a folder of files into the main window.
  2. Using the live-preview functionality, make changes to the list.
  3. Click "Rename Files".

See the Past, Present, and Future

Taking a cue from a certain DeLorean, file_wrangler's interface is divided into three major columns. "This one tells you where you are, this one tells you where you've been, this one tells you where you're going." This gives you the ability to live-preview how changes will affect the current filenames, as well as compare them against the original names. If you do any multi-step processing, you will greatly appreciate this feature. This also gives you the ability to revert back to the original names at any point during a renaming session.

Robust Documentation

I want everyone to feel comfortable with file_wrangler as quickly as possible. Included with the download is a robust, illustrated PDF outlining every feature, menu option, button, and more in file_wrangler. There is also a 3-step "Quick Start" instruction page for those who really dislike reading manuals.

Understand Name Conflicts

file_wrangler allows you to define filename "violations", i.e. to flag filenames that are too long or contain certain characters. Length and character violations are highlighted in the interface for past, present, and future filenames, giving you an at-a-glance understanding of the elimination or introduction of those violations during a session.

Complex Interface Made Simple

file_wrangler's interface can seem just a bit overwhelming at first, but the live preview of your changes combined with clearly defined division of toolsets will quickly reveal the power of its interface density. You can focus on exactly the individual tools you need at any given time, and intuitively understand the relationship between your renaming choices.

Tagged File List Exporting

You can use file_wrangler not only for renaming files, but for generating lists of files. The "Export List as Text" option allows you to generate a text file of the current, future, or past filename listing. Additional, you can append or prepend tags to each listing, useful for generating HTML or SQL code for use in other tools.

Configuration Sets

Every tweak and setting you make to the interface can be saved a configuration set. You may make as many sets as you wish, and can give them names that make sense like "OS X to SGI transfer" and the like. Additionally, a set may be chosen to be the default upon every launch of file_wrangler, allowing you to get to work as quickly as possible.
